A variety of remote sensing applications would benefit from miniature sensing devices capable of being interrogated at long range by reflecting an intense laser beam from them. Center researchers have developed liquid crystal-based retroreflection effects capable of modulating the reflected light intensity with high contrast for transmission of local measurement data on the reflected light.
